This homemade toothpaste works amazing & uses ingredients that you probably already have in your kitchen cabinet.
Can I be the first to say that switching to completely natural, low-tox products can start to be extremely pricey?
I have 5 kids and at this point in time, only my husband is working so that I can focus on homeschooling out kids. So we are a family of 7 living on one paycheck – and if you haven’t noticed right now, the economy is crazy.
Prices on EVERYTHING has gone way up and it can be hard to stay in budget when this happens.
I originally wasn’t trying to save money when I tried out this homemade toothpaste recipe, but I realized how big of a penny-pincher it is and had to share it.
Honestly, I didn’t order my favorite non-toxic toothpaste before I ran out, so I decided to try out a homemade version while I waited on a new tube in the mail – and I am glad that I did!
This recipe is easy to make, is cost-effective, and doesn’t use any questionable ingredients.

Benefits of Natural Toothpaste
A lot of regular toothpastes that you find on the shelves at your local grocery store aren’t the best – even when they claim they are.
Many of them contain toxic ingredients like flouride (yes, the stuff you used to swish in your mouth at the dentist and twice a year at elementary school) and is actually a neurotoxin that reduces the measures of intelligence in children.
This should be alarming, yet it’s the most common “active” ingredient in most conventional toothpastes.
Using natural toothpaste, you are limiting your exposure to toxic ingredients and still getting great results.
In fact, I’ll be so bold to say that you don’t really need to worry too much about your dental health IF you are eating a well diet.
Do you need to use toothpaste for the best oral health?
This might sound completely nuts if you reside in the western hemisphere, but your toothpaste is NOT your best line of defense in preventing cavities.
In Weston A. Price’s book “Nutrition & physical degeneration” he proves the real culprit to tooth decay and disease: DIET.
I was shocked the first time looking through his book and seeing case study after case study & proof of perfect oral health in people of some of the most remote countries.
In his studies, he observed perfect dental arches, minimal tooth decay, high immunity to tuberculosis and overall excellent health in those groups of people who ate their indigenous foods.
He found when these people were introduced to modernized foods, such as white flour, white sugar, refined vegetable oils and canned goods, signs of degeneration quickly became quite evident.
In his book, you’ll find the evidence quite clear: your toothpaste is nearly a non-factor depending on your diet.
Non-Toxic Toothpaste Recipe
This simple recipe is easy to make it will make your teeth feeling super clean!
Ingredients:
- 2 tbsp coconut oil. You might have heard that oil pulling can be beneficial for your health. Using coconut oil as a base to the toothpaste can act as an oil pulling agent while brushing & providing a smooth texture.
- 2 tbsp baking soda. Baking soda has loads of benefits for oral health including whitening teeth, preventing tooth decay, re-mineralizing enamel, and limits plaque build up.
- 3-5 drop of peppermint essential oil. Adding essential oil is completely optional, but gives the toothpaste a refreshing, clean feeling.
- 1 tsp xylitol (optional). Studies show that Xylitol dental benefits include effectively decrease acid-producing bacteria by up to 90%. Xylitol also keeps the bacteria from adhering to teeth which decreases plaque. Plus, it’s a sugar-free sweetner that can make your toothpaste more palatable.
- small glass jar. I used an empty Oui yogurt jar with a bamboo lid.
Directions:
1. Melt coconut oil in a saucepan & remove from heat.
2. Stir in baking soda, peppermint oil, and xylitol until well-mixed.
3. Allow to sit for 20-30 minutes and stir again. Place in container and keep out of direct sunlight.
Use a small amount to brush your teeth for at least 30 seconds, twice daily.
That’s it!
Now you have a great-working toothpaste that hardly took any time to make and saved you a bunch of Benjamins too!
