Non-toxic grout cleaner that’s safe to use around kids?

I was in complete disbelief when I first tried this natural grout cleaner using simple household ingredients.

I mean, I grew up seeing my own Mom scrub the grout on our kitchen floor using cleaners that filled the house with a chemical stench that seemed to linger on for days.

Since becoming a Mom myself, I have been very cautious about using toxic cleaners in our home, for no other reason than health and safety.

Not to mention, chemicals and fragrances give me an instant headache.

So the thought of cleaning the grout in my kitchen has never appealed to me. But, that was before I knew just how EASY it could be! Not to mention the safe ingredients that I already had on hand.

One day I was looking down at my kitchen tile and the grout started to make my eye twitch.

I couldn’t ignore the grime any longer.

We stay on top of a regular cleaning schedule. We live in a decently clutter-free home. But, my grout was sitting there, taunting me and making me realize just how much grime I had allowed to seep in over the years.

The grout had gone from a light grey to a light brown. Stained with dirt and grime from 5 years of heavy foot traffic in the most popular room in the house.

The cleaning feen in me was dissapointed to say the least. I knew that I had to get that grout cleaned, but the thought of stooping to toxic chemicals halted my desire for a long time.

Until I came across a simple recipe for homemade grout cleaner.

No harsh chemicals. No crazy time commitment. Just a few ingredients and a little bit of scrubbing and the grout would be clean.

I was skeptical until I actually tried it.

I whipped up the recipe (while holding a baby) evenly applied it to the grout, and waited for it to work it’s magic. After 5 minutes, I gently scrubbed off the mixture and to my disbelief, I found my once grey grout again.

Naturally, I couldn’t keep this secret to myself. Not when it works so incredibly well.

I have been burned in the past about natural cleaners working AMAZING and then coming to find that in reality, they don’t.

This recipe IS simple. It DOES work. Most likely, you already have all of the ingredients on hand. And if you don’t, it’s a simple run to the quick mart or drugstore.

3 ingredient homemade grout cleaner

  • 1/2 cup baking soda
  • 1/4 hydrogen perixode
  • 1 tsp liquid dish soap

Directions: Mix all together in a container or bowl to form as paste.

Use a squirt bottle or the spoon that you mixed it with to gently cover the grout.

Wait five minutes and then scrub off with a scouring pad or scrub brush.

That’s it!

The brand of these ingredients does not matter, but I do prefer to use a fragrance-free dish soap. Any kind of synthetic fragrance gives me an instant headache, so I just stick to the free and clear options.

I’ve been digging ECOS fragrance-free lately because it’s a budget-friendly option that I can get from my local Walmart. Use this link to get $20 off your first Walmart + order of delivered groceries.

Do you see the difference?!

Helpful tips when using this grout cleaner recipe

The first few times I scrubbed with a scouring pad on the back of my sponge. While this worked, it also rubbed the scouring pad down and left tiny bits of it on the floor.

So the second time around, I used a handheld scrubbing brush and it worked so much better. The brush cut down the scrubbing time in half with less effort.

You also want to make sure that you use it while it’s fresh.

Part of the magic behind the recipe is the bubbles from the peroxide and baking soda working together. If left long unused long enough, it might now have the same effect as it would if it were a fresh batch.

That’s all there is to it! Now you can have clean grout without having to stoop to toxic chemicals (or pay more than what you need to).
