Homemade Dishwasher Pod Recipe (Low-Tox, Budget-Friendly, and Actually Effective)

Switching to non-toxic cleaning products started the same way most good changes do for me.

Slowly. One swap at a time.

I didn’t wake up one morning and toss everything under my sink. I just started paying attention to what we were using every single day.

The dishwasher was one of those quiet offenders.

Plates. Cups. Silverware. Things that go straight into our bodies. And yet most store-bought dishwasher pods come with harsh ingredients, strong fragrances, and residue I couldn’t pronounce, let alone feel good about (or made me feel physically ill).

So I started making my own.

These DIY dishwasher pods are simple to make, inexpensive, and made with ingredients that actually clean, break down food debris, and leave dishes sparkling without the chemical haze. They’ve become a staple in our home, and once you try them, you’ll understand why.

Why Make Your Own Dishwasher Pods?

  • You control the ingredients

  • You avoid unnecessary toxins and synthetic fragrances

  • You save money over time

  • You reduce plastic waste

  • You still get clean, streak-free dishes

Simple swaps add up. This one happens multiple times a week in most homes, which makes it an easy win.

DIY Dishwasher Pod Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 cup washing soda
This is the heavy lifter. Washing soda cuts through grease, breaks down stuck-on food, and boosts overall cleaning power.

  • 1 cup baking soda
Baking soda gently cleans, deodorizes, and helps soften water so dishes rinse cleaner.

  • 1 cup citric acid
This is the secret to a streak-free shine. Citric acid helps break down residue, prevents cloudy glassware, and keeps mineral buildup at bay.

  • 1 cup coarse salt
Salt helps scrub away debris and supports water softening, which improves performance in hard water areas.

  • White vinegar (for setting pods)
Vinegar reacts with the dry ingredients to help the pods bind together and adds extra shine during the wash cycle

How to Make Dishwasher Pods

  1. In a large bowl, mix the washing soda, baking soda, citric acid, and salt until fully combined.

  2. Slowly spray or drizzle white vinegar into the mixture, just until it feels like damp sand. Go slowly to avoid excess fizzing.

  3. Press the mixture firmly into silicone molds or an ice cube tray (these molds are the PERFECT size)

  4. Let pods dry completely for at least 12 to 24 hours.

  5. Once hardened, pop them out and store in an airtight glass container.

Use one pod per load.

For extra shine, you can still add white vinegar to your dishwasher’s rinse aid compartment.

A Few Helpful Notes

  • These pods work best when dishes are scraped before loading.

  • If you have very hard water, adding vinegar as a rinse aid makes a noticeable difference.

  • Store pods in a dry place to prevent crumbling.

This recipe is flexible, forgiving, and easy to make in batches so you’re not constantly refilling.

Cleaning your home doesn’t have to come at the cost of your health or the environment.

These dishwasher pods are proof that simple, low-tox choices can still be effective, affordable, and easy to maintain long-term.
