Is it possible to keep your house clean daily with kids at home?

This is a question that I often asked myself in the early days of Motherhood.

I felt like all I did all day long was cleaning up messes constantly, but not getting anywhere.

I felt like everything was behind. And when I actually got it all caught up? Well, then the cycle started  over again.

Then sank in the annoyance & frustration of being a stay-at-home Mom.

Was I always doomed to clean all hours of the day and not get anywhere?

Was this my destiny for the foreeseble future?

It wasn’t until a few years and many frustrating times later that I discovered a method to keeping the house pretty clean every single day. And the best part was that I wasn’t spending hours cleaning.

I was doing less work, but I was getting better results. How is that even possible?!?

It’s not exactly anything new, but it has dramatically changed my life as a Mom.

I know that sounds pretty dramatic, but when you are in desperate need of a break and feel like your wheels are spinning non-stop cleaning up messes around the clock, then it’s nothing short of an answered prayer.

If you want to keep your house clean daily with kids at home, then you MUST follow a daily cleaning schedule.

When I started following a daily cleaning schedule, my life instantly changed.

I no longer felt the pressure of having to clean everything all of the time.

My cleaning was more organized.

I knew exactly what to focus on and when.

I had a plan and when I stuck to it, it drastically reduced the time that I spent cleaning.

I have been following this plan for the past 5 years and not much has changed.

The only thing that has changed is that my kids are a little bit older, so they help pitch in with the daily chores so I don’t have to do it all.

So, what does a daily cleaning schedule look like?

For me, it’s focusing on one part of the house per day of the week. This way, every room in the house gets a nice deep clean, but it’s spread out over time so it’s easier to handle and keep up with.

Once I switched to a daily cleaning routine, a huge amount of stress was released from my life.

I was able to do more things for myself and my kids throughout the day – making it a no-brainer choice for a busy work-from-home, homeschooling Momma like myself.

Here’s what our daily cleaning routine looks like:

Monday – Bathrooms

We clean all of the bathrooms top to bottom on Mondays. This includes scrubbing the toilets, washing off countertops, scrubbing showers and bath tubs, sweeping & mopping floors, changing toiletries and towels, and emptying the waste baskets.

Tuesday – Kitchen

Let’s face it, I clean the kitchen daily, sometimes more than once, but on Tuesdays, the kitchen gets a lot of TLC. This includes scrubbing the sinks and countertops, wiping down all appliances and cabinets, changing towels & sponges, emptying the trash and recycle bins, and cleaning the floors really good.

Wednesday – Bedrooms

Daily maintenance is a must, but on Wednesdays we do a deep dive into bedrooms. This involves, sweeping, dusting, tidying, changing the bedding, and making sure all laundry is caught up on and put away.

Thursday – living areas

This is also a daily thing that we try to stay on top of, but on Thursday we do a much deeper clean. This includes washing blankets, wiping down furniture, dusting, sweeping, and vacuuming under furniture cushions (which is a weekly must if you have little kids that make lots of crumbs).

Friday – weekly tasks

This is the day where we do random cleaning tasks around the house. Washing windows, scrubbing baseboards, washing down doors & handles, banisters, and light switches. I also like to clean out the vacuum cleaner & restock cleaning supplies if it’s needed.

Weekend – catch up

We like to relax on the weekend, but also use it as a catch-up day if the week got away from us or we were out of the house and couldn’t get to everything. I also like to use the weekends as an opportunity to catch up on laundry and organize closets so that we are set for the new week with clean clothes and a tidy space. If anything needs touched up, this is the perfect time do quickly get it done.

Daily chores

We also have daily chores that we do every single day. These are a MUST to keep the house tidy and clean all week long and they are non-negotiable. They include making beds, tidying up rooms, doing the dishes, putting away laundry as needed, and sweeping the kitchen after dinner.

Now, sometimes life gets in the way, someone gets sick, or crap just hits the fan.

That is life and it is far from perfection. But, for the most part, we stick to this schedule and it really helps keep us on track.

The important thing to remember is that getting into a daily cleaning habit is a choice and it requires discipline. But once you start seeing the rewards that it provides not just for yourself, but for your entire family, you will be motivated to continue.

Following a daily cleaning schedule is made even easier if it’s visible in a central location of your home.

I personally like to have ours printed out and hung on the refrigerator because everyone sees it throughout the day.

I have created this printable cleaning schedule that you can use to help you keep your house clean daily with kids.
