I’ve been using natural remedies for over twenty years now, though I didn’t exactly grow up that way.

Back then, being sick meant grape-flavored Dimetapp and cherry Tylenol. That was the routine. So when I got engaged to my husband and he started working in the wellness section at our local Whole Foods, I felt like I’d wandered into a completely different universe.

Day after day, he came home with stories. Herbs for headaches. Vitamins for immunity. Simple remedies people used instead of running straight to the pharmacy. I listened politely, nodded occasionally, and stayed deeply skeptical. It all felt unfamiliar and honestly a little strange.

But curiosity has a way of tugging when you least expect it.

As I learned more about the side effects of conventional medicine and the quieter benefits of natural options, something shifted. I started researching. Reading labels. Trying small things. Paying attention to what actually helped. One discovery led to another, and before I knew it, my medicine cabinet looked very different than the one I grew up with.

Fast forward a few years and five kids later, and natural remedies have become a steady part of our home.

Not in a perfect or extreme way. Just practical, well-loved tools I reach for again and again.

In this post, I’m opening that cabinet and sharing my must-haves. The remedies I keep stocked. The ones I’ve leaned on through fevers, sniffles, sleepless nights, and all the everyday moments that come with family life.

Let’s get into it.

Natural Medicine Cabinet Must-haves

These are a must-have simply because these natural remedies actually work. They have been used over and over again in our home with 5 different kids of all ages and stages & they are the ones I cannot live without.

Boiron Oscillococcinum

As we call it Oscillo for short, this homeopathic remedy works with your body to help you relieve cold & flu symptoms FAST. Once you start feeling the flu symptoms coming on (fatigue, body aches, chills, fever, etc.) don’t wait to start dosing! This remedy works amazing when you use it correctly.

And if you don’t believe me, just read the 31,000+ reviews on Amazon.

Arnica

Another homeopathic winner is this one for bruises & swelling. As a Mom of 5 boys, you can bet that this is ALWAYS stocked up in our medicine cabinet.

It’s available in pellets (like most homeopathic remedies), oil, gels, and creams.

Personally, I like using the pellets when a major trauma has happened and the others when there’s a small, localized bump or bruise that needs it.

Herbal infused cough syrup

If straight honey doesn’t help, I reach for natural, herbal infused cough syrups.

Honey helps to soothe. Ivy helps to clear up mucus. Chamomile (for night time) helps to relax and sleep better.

No icky artificial dyes of flavors, just a straight from nature remedy that actually works.

Essential Oils

I will admit, I use essential oils VERY sparingly and with good practices in place. We NEVER ingest & always apply topically with a carrier oil like fractionated coconut oil.

And when we reach for oils, it’s ALWAYS with a reputable, organic brand like Plant Therapy or Now Foods. They make quality essential oils without the massive price tag like other popular essential oil brands.

Lavender
This is the calm-down oil in our house. I reach for it with scrapes, bug bites, bedtime routines, and any moment that needs a little soothing, both for skin and for nerves.

Peppermint
Peppermint is my go-to for headaches, tummy troubles, and mid-afternoon energy crashes. It also helps calm carsick tummies very quick – definitely one of my most-used oils!

Tea Tree
This one earns its spot for skin support. I use it for cuts, blemishes, and anything that needs extra cleansing care without being harsh.

Eucalyptus
When breathing feels heavy or chests feel tight, eucalyptus comes out. It’s especially helpful during cold season and makes showers and diffusers feel purposeful instead of panicky.

Frankincense
This is the oil I keep reaching for when nothing else quite fits. It supports overall wellness, helps calm inflammation, and feels grounding in a way that’s hard to explain but easy to trust.

A Quick Note on Essential Oil Safety

Essential oils are powerful, which is why a little goes a long way. I always dilute oils with a carrier oil before using them on skin, especially for kids, and I avoid applying them near eyes, ears, or sensitive areas. When in doubt, start small, use less than you think you need, and pay attention to how your body responds. Simple, slow, and intentional has always served our family well

Herbal powerhouses

When it comes to immune support, I like to keep things simple and time-tested. These are the herbs I reach for most often because they’ve earned their place through years of real-life use, not trends.

They’re versatile, easy to keep on hand, and supportive in different seasons of wellness, whether we’re building immunity or responding when something starts to feel off.

This little lineup forms the backbone of my natural medicine cabinet and gives me peace of mind knowing I have steady, reliable support within arm’s reach

Elderberry
This is one of my first reaches at the very beginning of a sniffle. Elderberry supports the immune system and feels especially helpful during cold and flu season.

Echinacea
Echinacea shines when the body needs extra backup. I use it short-term when someone feels run down or when immune support is needed right away.

Ginger
Ginger does so much more than help digestion. It supports immune health, warms the body, and is especially comforting when paired with tea during sick days. I personally like to add this to hot water, a splash of fresh lemon juice & a pinch of honey daily to boost my immune system.

Garlic
This humble kitchen staple is a powerhouse. Garlic supports immune function and is something I lean on both preventatively and when illness starts making the rounds.

Oregano Oil

While it’s not recommended to use when pregnant or nursing, this stuff really packs a punch when you start to feel that little tickle in your throat and the onset of a cold. In tincture form, this stuff is strong & effective. I like to use it this way when my body is fighting a bug. But when I am healthy? I prefer to take it in gel caps daily during cold & flu season to give my body some extra immune support.

Glutathione Patches

This one is probably something you may have never heard of, but one of modern health’s best-kept secret.

I started using these patches when my 4th baby got hit with a really bad GI infection. Nothing was working. Even children’s urgent care just told us to “ride it out.” But my Mommy gut was telling me that he needed more immune support.

Lucky for me, a family member had these patches on hand and it was an absolute game-changer. Within the first hour, I would notice a tremendous difference in his stools and by that evening, all of this tummy cramping had ceased.

I use their other patches too – some of my favorites are aeon for inflammation & brain-balancing, ice waves for inflammation & fevers, and carnosine for injury flare ups.

The technology is almost too amazing to believe, so if you’re a skeptic like me, they offer a 90-day money-back guarantee.

Petroleum-Free chest rub

A good, old-fashioned remedy, but without the petroleum by-products and other toxic ingredients.

I always look for ingredients and relaxing herbs that are both soothing and not overpowering for infants – like this rub.

Building a natural medicine cabinet didn’t happen overnight for me.

It grew slowly, one remedy at a time, through seasons of learning, trial, and a whole lot of family life. My hope is that this post gives you a starting point and a little confidence as you choose what fits your home best.

If this resonated, there’s more waiting for you. I share additional posts on natural remedies, everyday wellness, and simple ways to support your family with intention and care.
