Where do I begin with Mrs. Meyers.

The striking branding?

The alluring mission statement?

Their “sustainability” project?

This is what really stands out to me:

We’re mindful throughout our formula development process, from how our ingredients are sourced to how they break down. When selecting our ingredients, we work closely with our suppliers to ensure our raw materials are sourced responsibly. We’re also conscious of our products leaving as minimal of a footprint as possible.

My problem with Mrs. Meyers cleaning products is that they are the EPITOME of greenwashing.

From the deceptive marketing to their feel-good garden-centered website, everything just seems fishy.

My first (and only) experience with using Mrs. Meyers products was this year.

I have long been sensitive to fragrances that have sent my body into agony, mainly in the form of headaches. In the past year however, my chemical sensitivities have only peaked.

Fortunately, I have been on a really great healing path with had lessened my reactions to a lot of smells, so I have been more free to try more scented products.

I thought I could be safe with Mrs. Meyers , especially with their claim of “garden inspired scents that are made with essential oils”.

But I thought wrong.

Essential oils??? I think not.

Upon just filling my sink with their lemon verbena dish soap (lemon is always a safe scent for me), I was instantly regretting my spontaneity to try something new.

Not only did the dish soap smell linger in the entire kitchen, it seemed to permeate into my skin and no amount of washing would rid the stench away.

I was stuck with the smell and the ever-growing headache and brain fog that it brought on.

For 2 days did I suffer from the lingering effects of that dish soap as it lingered in the air and clung to every surface of my kitchen and every dish that it touched.

To my untimely dismay, I noticed the culprit typed plain as day on the ingredients label: FRAGRANCE

What’s so bad about fragrance?

Where to start with fragrance…how about here.

Some fragrance can cause allergies, asthma attacks, headaches, neurological problems (hmm…that sure sounds familiar), and can even be endocrine disrupters.

Fragrance isn’t a one-size fits all ingredient. There’s an umbrella, and sadly, many companies don’t disclose what’s actually in their fragrance because they won’t need to.

The one positive thing that  I WILL say about Mrs. Meyers is that they do disclose their fragrance ingredients here.

It’s more like a allergy fragrance cocktail if you ask me.

I’ll say it again. Essential oils MY ASS.

Not only do their “garden inspired” scented products contain fragrance allergens, they are also owned by SC Johnson.

Is this a company that you would trust to make non-toxic products?

The same company that also owns Glade, Pledge, Raid, Windex, Scrubbing bubbles, & Shout?

Another red flag with their products is that they use a  preservative called methylisothiazolinone.

Methylisothiazolinone is what’s known as a skin sensitizer, which means that it can give you all sorts of really terrible skin reactions from anywhere from mild dry skin and eczema to all out blisters, welts and peeling skin. Just Google it and see for yourself (I like to keep this blog as cheerful as possible).

Methylisothiazolinone is also thought to be a neurotoxin, which means that it may be toxic to nerve cells.

Not only that, but MI is also very hazardous to aquatic life. And that’s really concerning, when you consider that a large majority of Mrs. Meyer’s products get rinsed down the drain and end up in our water supply

Especially when part of their mission statement is “conscious of our products leaving as minimal of a footprint as possible.”

Mrs. Meyers, no matter how warm and inviting the products might look like, does not get my seal of approval.

But, this is just my opinion. You don’t have to agree with me.

I am simply here to say that I cannot define this company as eco-friendly and non-toxic because their ingredients speak for themselves.
