Blogging for business: is it really necessary?
I’m sure you see businesses all the time who don’t blog or even have a website that seem fairly successful, so why should you even bother?
While it may be true that many businesses seem to get along just fine without a blog, it could be argued that these said businesses could benefit even more from having a blog.
Why?
Because the internet is the lifeblood of organic business these days.
When you go to look for a new place to get your hair done or a photographer to take your family photos, where do you usually turn to?
The internet.
If there’s a really amazing hairstylist out there that isn’t listed on the internet, then how are they going to be found organically by people who are looking for them?
And that is just not having a website.
Not having a blog introduces other pain points that you might not even be aware of!
Ignorance might be bliss, but would you rather take the gamble and not have a blog than taking a few extra hours a week curating one to bring in even more business? (and, ahem, more sales?)
Let’s uncover just how important blogging is for business and why you should start one right away!

Establishes authority
When you can write & share what you love in your business niche, while providing invaluable content for your readers, you are making yourself known as an expert.
When others can see that you know what you’re talking about, or that you are answering questions they didn’t know to ask, your expertise just went through the roof.
Think about it.
Say you’re out hunting for someone to install a pool into your backyard and you stumble across a local website.
On this website, you not only find company info, pricing, and testimonials, but you stumble across their blog.
You start reading a few of their posts and you soon discover that the pool you were envisioning might not work for your backyard. Or perhaps now you’re considering a salt water pool instead – all because of information you found on their blog.
A blog can be a non-spammy way of sharing your expertise and knowledge with a large crowd and immediately increase your credibility.
Now, how does that sound?
Attracts new leads
When someone is in the market for what you’re offering, your blog can be a gold mine when it comes to reeling in new leads.
Your blog can offer valuable advice and solutions, while also demonstrating a bit of your business personality.
New leads now have a chance to take a small peek behind the curtain to see if you would be a good match for them.
This not only helps you, but it helps them make a better decision too.
Boosts SEO
When you are working on your website and wanting to get fresh eyes that turn into new clients and customers, then you’ll need to know a thing or two about SEO.
Search engine optimization is a practice that boosts your website rankings and helps you get seen by more people.
When people are searching for your exact product or service, good SEO will be your friend when the search results pop up.
So what does having a blog have anything to do with SEO?
A LOT.
Each time you create a new blog post, you are essentially adding a new page of content to your website.
If you are strategic with what you are blogging about and the keywords and phrases you use throughout your post, then your website now has another page of relevant content that will help you with ranking higher in search engines.
If you blog at least once a week, that’s 52 new pages of content you are adding to your website every year.
That’s 52 unique opportunities to make your site more relevant for your niche!
This is why blogging is so essential for online businesses.
Since they have a huge pool of competition from around the world, ranking in search engines can be really tough-going. But with a blog, it create more opportunity to add new pages of relevant content to their site & generate more traffic than before.
If your business could land on the first page of google for your niche, how do you think that would change the game for you?
Helps you stand out
Remember that thing I mentioned about showing your brand’s personality?
Well, this is how you can stand out and shine in your niche – by blogging and creating a fun and educational dialogue with your audience.
Back to the hairstylist.
Do you know many salons or independent stylists who have a website and publishes blog posts on the regular?
Neither do I.
Imagine if you could start blogging hair tips, your favorite products, hair styles for different occasions, and hair coloring trends on your blog.
You’d be showing your expertise to a large pool of potential clients AND you’d be doing something nobody else in your area is doing.
What an easy way to stand out!
And guess what? If you already have a website, then the only thing it costs you is your time.
Develops trust
When you can give valuable information, advice, and tips to your readers and audience, this can quickly build a solid foundation of trust.
If you’re willing to help people before they hire you, then it’s a no-brainer for them to figure out how you’ll treat them once they become a client or customer of yours.
This is my favorite aspect of blogging.
Yes, it might take some time to build that trust, but once someone finally does hire or buy from you, then that is golden.
These customers are often times my biggest fans and refer others to me the most – because they truly trust me and put a lot of value into what I do because of the service and resources I have provided them with from day one of the relationship.
So if you’re still thinking blogging isn’t for you, this right here might just change your mind.
Keeps your website current
As far as SEO goes, if you’re looking to stay ranked higher in search results, then keeping your website current and up-to-date is the first step.
And blogging makes that so easy.
Google takes websites more seriously when the content is updated and refreshed on a regular basis, so if you can blog once a week (or more!), then you will have no trouble staying ahead of the game.
Not only is it good for search engine rankings, but blogging on the regular can tell your potential customers and clients A LOT.
If they see that you haven’t blogged in 6 months, then what do you think is going through their head?
Most likely, they are thinking that your business isn’t a big priority, or perhaps you’re even going out of business or not doing that line of work anymore.
But if they see that you are keeping up with your blog every week, then it’s pretty apparent that your business is alive and well – giving them more reason to reach out and hire you.
Blogging is more than just rambling your thoughts on your website for the whole world to see.
It can be used as a powerful (and very cheap) way to market your business.
And if you can set aside an extra hour or two each week to work on your blog, then why wouldn’t you start one?
Do you blog for your business? Why or why not?
